Peach and Joystick

Client - City of Sunnyvale

Date - Dec 2024

Tool - Acrylic paint, gesso, primer, vanish, on fiberglass sculpture

My design was selected for the Sun of Sunnyvale program. It will be installed in one of the municipal parks in 2025.

'Peach and Joystick' celebrates Sunnyvale's essence of innovation and sustainability, from its agricultural roots to its technological revolution.

Both sides of the sun have the city name, ‘Sunnyvale’, forming an abstract 'brain', emphasizing the city as a hub of new ideas. Each side then shows an iconic symbol that brings joy to people around the world:

  • The peach, surrounded by text in a curvy font, represents the Sunnyvale's past as the world’s largest fruit canning city.

  • The CX40 joystick, the first widely used game controller in the world, surrounded by text in an angular font, honors the local video game company Atari, reflecting the city's pivotal role in the digital age.

Designed for the 4' x 4' sculpture, ‘Peach and Joystick’ employs a bold, cartoonish style with vibrant colors, inspired by the 60s graphic design from Bay Area. It is accessible to viewers of all ages and can be viewed easily from a distance.

Through this artwork, I hope to delight people, while inviting them to discover and appreciate the lesser-known aspects of Sunnyvale’s rich history.
